Apple Releases iOS 27.0.1 Fixing iPhone 18 Pro Face ID Restarts Issue

Summary: Apple has released iOS 27.0.1, the first update since iOS 27 launched two weeks ago. The update fixes three issues, most notably a bug that caused the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max to restart unexpectedly when Face ID failed to authenticate. It also addresses a camera color artifact and a touchscreen freeze.

Apple has pushed out iOS 27.0.1, its first software update since iOS 27 went live on September 14, and it is mostly aimed at fixing problems that iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max users have been dealing with since launch.

The biggest fix addresses a Face ID issue that has been a persistent complaint among iPhone 18 Pro users. Some owners reported that their phone would unexpectedly restart whenever Face ID failed to authenticate, while others saw a “Face ID is Not Available” message when trying to set it up.

A few also reported problems with the Require Attention setting for Face ID. The iPhone 18 Pro is the first iPhone to move the infrared camera used for Face ID under the display, but Apple has not said whether the hardware itself contributed to the bug.

iOS 27.0.1 also fixes two other issues. One is a color artifact that could appear on photos taken at 2x zoom under certain lighting conditions at f/1.48 on a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max units. The other is a bug where opening the Notification Center and Control Center at the same time could make the touchscreen completely unresponsive.

The update is available now through Settings > General > Software Update. Given that the Face ID bug could cause random restarts, iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max owners should install this one as soon as possible.
