Summary: iFixit has torn down Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo using CT scans and 3D modelling, tracing recurring screen failures to the same point near the central hinge. The teardown points to 2 possible mechanical causes, and the findings are backed by YouTuber JerryRigEverything.
Everyone is excited to get their hands on Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo. However, concerns over its durability continue to linger on as multiple owners report the screen cracking at the same spot. But thanks to the testing by iFixit, we may find out the reason why it is happening.
What’s Causing the Cracks on iPhone Duo
As per the teardown popular repair outlet iFixit, their CT scans and 3D modelling traced the recurring screen failures to the point where the flex cable meets the central hinge support.

iFixit points to 2 possible culprits. The central support bar is designed to retract as the phone folds shut, and if it does not pull back cleanly, it can push concentrated force onto the folding screen. The curved hinge rails that guide the waterdrop fold are the second suspect.
These metal rails sit above the surrounding components, so any deviation from its intended path could press into the display layers. Several structural edges meet at this exact flex point, so even a tiny misalignment is enough to crack the screen.
Signs of the Problem
Owners of iPhone Duo took to Reddit to voice their issues, describing a crunching sound while folding or unfolding the phone, followed by permanent bright lines on the inner display.
Popular YouTuber, Zach from JerryRigEverything backed up iFixit’s theory, confirming a dust entry point at the same location. He also ran a bend test on the device, and it damaged the screen the same way other users and iFixit had already reported.
Repairability and What’s Next
On the plus side, iFixit gave the foldable high marks for battery repairability, though it did not hand out an overall repairability score. Apple has not commented on the screen issue so far. Despite the cracks, the foldable has reportedly sold well, and a second-generation model is already expected.
